New South Wales
The Catholic Dioceses which make up the State of New South Wales sought to involve all Australians in celebrating the Canonisation of Mary MacKillop; one of our great pioneering historic figures.
In recognition of Mary's wide-ranging appeal, not only to Catholics, but to the nation as a whole – borne of her legacy in establishing social welfare and health care initiatives, spanning education, hospitals, support for the oppressed and the destitute, and for those both young and old. Mary epitomises the strength of our forebears which made Australia the nation it is today.
Mary's Canonisation was both a milestone in our nation's history with the spotlight shining on Australia once again and an international event Many thousands travelled to Rome to participate where the event was televised and web-streamed live, to millions of people from around the globe.
